Another penalty conceded as Canaries fall short again

- SOUITHERN PREMIER LEAGUE LEISTON 2 BARWELL 1

LEISTON took the three points with a comfortable 2-1 win over Barwell on Saturday. The Canaries got a goal back just after they went two goals down but they couldn’t summon up an equaliser and Leiston had enough to take the win.

There were early warning signs for Barwell when George Quantrell had a shot that Max Bramley had to make a good save to keep out. This was the first of several chances that the Leiston man had during the afternoon.

It was the away side, however, that had the next two chances and could easily have gone ahead.

First, Lucas Powell was put through one on one with the Leiston goalkeeper but he chose to try and flick it across the box rather than shoot. The second was a fine long range effort from Ben Stephens, back in the starting line up for Barwell, that Sam Donkin made a flying save to keep out.

Moments later Barwell conceded a penalty when Seb Dunbar was fouled on the byline after receiving a great ball from Adam Mills. This was the 10th penalty that Barwell have given away this season and it was scored by Will Davies to give the home side the lead.

This gave Leiston a real boost and they dominated much of the remaining thirty minutes of the half. Joe Marsden, Oliver Saunders and Quantrell all had good chances to score.

Barwell had a set back after only 21 minutes when Ben Stephens, a real threat up front, had to go off injured. The striker has been struggling with a hamstring injury in recent weeks and will be hoping to be back fully fit soon.

The second half started with little of note to give any of the watching fans much to shout about.

It wasn’t until just past the hour mark that any chance was to come and there were two to Leiston in quick succession. Joe Marsden shot straight at Bramley and then Finlay Barnes brought out a

good save from the Barwell number one.

A flurry of activity took place with 20 minutes to go. Leiston got a second goal when Barwell gave possession away far too easily and Barnes was able to fine Quantrell who finished well. Just a minute later and Barwell had got a goal back through Lucas Powell.

There was a mistake in the Leiston defence and that allowed Powell to nip in and

poke the ball home for 2-1.

Suddenly there was some hope for the Canaries and they started to press Leiston. Leandro Browne brought another good save from Donkin after good work by Jahvan Davidson-Miller and there was a headed chance for Brady Hickey.

Leiston weathered this storm and imposed themselves back on the game for the remaining 10 minutes to see it out for the win.
