Hinckley war memorial names have been commemorated in new DVD

-

A collaboration between local historian Greg Drozdz and Hinckley District Past and Present’s (HDPP) Paul Gardner has produced a special and unique production to mark this year’s Remembrance.

In the past, Greg has spent many months and hours researching the names on the memorial and, where possible, supplying pictures to accompany them.

Now, for the first time, every name on the memorial is recalled and where possible accompanied by a picture.

A second DVD is planned to commemorate next year’s 100th anniversary of the memorial itself which was unveiled in May 1922.

Greg said: “The services around Remembrance at the memorial have rarely involved the deeply emotional and poignant reading of all the names. After all, there are almost a thousand names recorded on the memorial panels.

“The list of surnames becomes transformed into a living testament to those who put aside their personal hopes and ambitions to pursue what was seen as a great common cause. For this they gave with their lives.

“Remember their names with gratitude.”

Paul Gardner, along with his wife Sue, spent many hours checking the research of names and ensuring all names were included. He said: “This project has really brought home to me the sacrifice these servicemen and women gave to all of us. As the sombre music plays and the names are read out and the faces go by, it makes you wonder what lives would have lain ahead for these young souls called away for their country. It’s truly heartbreaking.”

Paul added: “I would urge any family who has an ancestor, relative who is on the memorial to consider purchasing this DVD by way of a tribute and also a family keepsake for future generations of their family.”

All proceeds from the sale of the DVD will go to the local Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

You can obtain your copy in the following ways: from Jaspers Store in Castle Street, from the Royal British Legion poppy stall in Britannia Centre or direct from Hinckley District Past & Present (HDPP) by emailing contact@hdpp. co.uk
