A revised scheme to build 73 homes on an area of woodland in Market Bosworth has been approved.

Owl Homes brought forward the plans to develop the Sedgemere site, to the south of Station Road, between the Ashby Canal and the Battlefield Line railway.

Vehicles will access the site via Station Road, with the development to include 40 per cent affordable housing.

The developer previously applied to build 76 homes on the site.

This was refused by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council because of concerns about the impact on the canal and wildlife, and that the layout of the homes would not enhance the character of the area.

Several people opposed the fresh scheme, raising concerns more homes would worsen current traffic problems and that new developments will increase air pollution.

The parish council supported the 73 homes bid, as the site falls within the settlement boundary for the town and complies with its neighbourhood plan.

Another 100 homes and an employment space are set to be built nearby on the Station Fields site.

A masterplan for the development was agreed last year by the borough council and several groups, including the parish council.

However, the parish council has expressed alarm at developers’ ambitions to build on several other sites in the town.

Gladman resubmitted a scheme earlier this year for 90 homes off Shenton Lane, while Ainscough Strategic Land has filed plans to build 105 homes to the north of Station Road.

Richborough also applied to build 63 homes this year along the road that leads up to the Kyngs Golf and Country Club, off Station Road.

Councillors turned down this scheme over concerns it would spoil the character of the area and go against the neighbourhood plan, but the developer has now appealed the decision.

Plans were approved in May 2020 to reopen the golf course, which is to be revamped with a new clubhouse and a holiday complex with six cabins.
