Hinckley and District Parkinson’s Group

-

NOT many people understand what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s. They don’t realise that treatments are limited and that there is no cure. This is why coming together in a group can be so helpful.

Do not get the idea that our group meetings are sad and serious affairs as there is a great emphasis on enjoyment, fun and helpful activities. At the last Sunday meeting we were entertained by Pat Hall who brought joy and laughter and shared some tales and tips in her funny comedy routine.

At the same meeting we were joined by Hinckley couple Bill and Theresa Pope.

Bill had raised an amazing £607 in aid of the group on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Fundraising is obviously important to allow the group to arrange so many activities – paying for room hire or for professional support from our activity leaders for example. On June 25th one of our committee members, Julie Bailey [known to us as Julie Bliss], is going to jump out of an aircraft to raise valuable funds for two very worthy causes, the Motor Neurone Disease team at LOROS and Parkinson’s UK Hinckley Group.

Julie is a Holistic Therapist working for and with clients with MND or Parkinson’s, and their carers, to bring some relief into their lives. Julie works in the community and visits individuals in their homes enabling them to receive the support they need.

Julie says: “It is a drop in the ocean but I hope it gives them as much reward as it gives me. They inspire me, they humble me and they encourage me to give more.”

If you would like to support Julie and donate to either or both of these worthy causes you can do so in a variety of ways: you can fill in a sponsor form available at any of our meetings, or you can go to Just Giving at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/julie-bailey64

The 64 sends donations to LOROS, but if you change it to 58 your donation goes to Parkinson’s UK.

If you prefer to donate with cash or cheque you can contact Julie herself on 07952 181 797 to arrange details.

Our next Sunday meeting at the Mary Forryan Centre, Hinckley, will be on Sunday May 8 at 2.30pm; the informal ‘Drop In’ at Dobbies cafe [Stapleton] on Monday May 17 from 2pm; Nordic Walking from the Acorn Café on Burbage Common will be at 11am on Thursday May 26 [Ring Peter Abraham for confirmation on 01455 636776]; while exercise classes continue on Tuesdays, with Dance and Singing sessions on

Fridays at Elmesthorpe.

For further information on any of our activities please contact Janet Kavanagh on 07932615233.

So don’t let Parkinson’s dictate how you live your life, come along and join the Hinckley Group and see the benefits for yourself.
