Midlands champ Haywood is targeting Lonsdale Belt

- By MATT BOZEAT

KYLE Haywood sees next month’s Midlands title defence in Leicester as a stepping stone to the Lonsdale Belt.

Promoter Carl Greaves has announced the 30-yearold from Earl Shilton will put his super welterweight belt on the line against unbeaten Ryan Amos on his show at the Morningside Arena on Saturday, May 28.

Amos has won all eight fights and Haywood said: “I want to win this fight and push on.

“I want to be fighting for the English title this year and I believe I will go on to challenge for the British title.

“I believe I am at that level – and I want to prove it next month.

“I want to show that I am beyond Midlands title level.”

Haywood captured the vacant belt with a points win over Derby southpaw Alex Fearon at the Leicester venue back in September 2021.

He won by a single point on the referee’s scorecard, though it looked wider to some ringsiders.

There was back-and-forth action throughout and Haywood predicts more excitement for city fight fans when he defends his belt.

Haywood believes the fight with Amos will give fans just as much excitement.

“We sparred a couple of rounds and I know he’s an aggressive, come forward pressure fighter, “said Haywood. “He’s unbeaten and won his last fight by stoppage, so will be full of confidence and hungry. “I’m up for the challenge. “If he wants to get his head on my chest, I don’t think it’s going to end too well for him, but I’m prepared for anything and I’m a 10-round fighter.

“It takes me a couple of rounds to warm into a fight and then I get better as it goes on.”

Haywood said he will have plenty of support at the Morningside Arena, where Callum Blockley, Joe Ducker, Kenan Brown Wingfield, Connor Ireson, Ellis Hopkins and Brad Bethell will also be in action.
