Sarah and band wow audience with all that jazz

-

VISITORS to Newbold Verdon Jazz Club had a great night recently listening to Sarah Spencers Transatlantic Band.

They entertained the crowd by playing a great range of traditional jazz music.

Several of the tunes, including Chicken Ain’t Nothing But A Bird, Burnin’ The Iceberg and Titanic Man Blues were new to the audience and had been arranged by Sarah during the lockdown, with other wellknown jazz musicians including “Magic” Mike Henry, who delighted the audience with his trumpet playing on the night.

The band personnel included Jim Swinnerton on bass, Hugh Crozier piano, Rob Pearce trombone, Graham Smith on drums and, of course, Sarah on saxophone and clarinet.

On Friday, May 6, the club welcomes The Pedigree Jazzmen.

Chris Walker has for over 30 years presented a weekly Jazz Programme broadcast by radio stations all over the world.

However he is also a very fine musician and was a founder member of the famous Real Ale and Thunder Band, whose many TV appearances, included Songs of Praise for the BBC.

A while ago he decided to get back to his roots and recreate the hit tunes of the British “Trad Jazz” boom of the 1950s and 60s.

To do this he formed The Pedigree Jazz Band. In their show “Salute to Trad Jazz” they play the most popular tunes of the era, such as Petite Fleur, Green Leaves Of Summer and many others.

The band has proved to be a resounding success, with rave reviews and repeat bookings from nearly everywhere they perform.

A spokesman for the club said: “Do come along to Newbold Verdon Social Club and help us keep the jazz club going.

“The music is from 8pm to 10.30pm and admission is £10 payable on the door.”
