Fraud warning issued by police after fake email

-

PEOPLE in Burbage have been warned about a scam email claiming to be from Sky.

A resident warned about a hoax email they had received, claiming to be from Sky UK, that said the “classic version of Sky you are using on your computer will no longer work. For continued use of your Sky or basic mail just update your email address”.

The fake email then provides a link for the recipient to click on.

In a police update for the village, officers warned residents to be wary of similar messages.

The force said: “The email does look convincing so please directly contact any business rather than calling numbers or clicking links within suspicious messages.

“You can also block/report these messages if you receive them.”

There were also reports of issues with door to door sales in the Brookside and Azalea Drive areas.

Officers suggested door chains or refusing to answer the door if you would prefer not to interact with the sales people.

You can also print off a no cold calling sign here.

Motorists were also warned about a spate of thefts from vehicles at the Jurys Inn hotel in April.

Drivers were urged to make sure their vehicles were locked with nothing left inside.

Speaking generally about fraud, Police said: “It’s very important to keep up to date with the ways fraudsters try to take our money.

“You may already know some of the tricks they use, but the rise of the internet means new ones are being invented all the time, and huge amounts of money can be taken.

“Whether it’s dating fraud, banking fraud, identity theft or even people knocking on your door, find out how modern fraud works, what you can do to guard against it and how to report it.
