There is nothing worse than regret over missing out

-

A man in America once went with a friend for a drive out into the country.

They drove along main roads for a while and then they turned off on to country roads, they went through orange groves to a mostly uninhabited piece of land. There were a couple of old wooden shacks and a few horses grazing but nothing else. The driver of the car Walter, stopped the car and began to describe to his friend Arthur the plans he had in mind for this deserted piece of land, he spoke about the things he intended to build.

He then said to his friend Arthur I would like you to buy all the land around my project, he told him it would be a big project and he wanted his friend Arthur to be apart of it.

Arthur thought to himself, I think Walter has lost the plot who in their right mind is going to drive 25 miles out here, it doesn’t make any sense. So Arthur made some excuses about money being tight and that he would really have to give it some thought, but really he had made his mind up not to take up Walter’s offer.

And so it was Arthur turned down the opportunity to buy the land that surround Walter’s project, that project was Walt Disney, Arthur missed out on a great opportunity, we might like to think we would have taken the opportunity, always easier with hindsight.

We might not be faced with multi million pound opportunities, but opportunities of different sorts come our way and there is nothing worse than regret. We might think that’s ok but I have missed opportunities. Opportunities to be with someone, missed opportunities to do things, an act of kindness etc. We can’t change what has happened in the past, but we can make sure it doesn’t get us down and prevent us from taking opportunities today and that is what is important.

I have a friend who one day put his faith and trust in Jesus Christ and when he did it helped him to make sense of life, why are we here, what is the purpose of life? At last some of the questions he had were being answered. I remember him saying, I wish I had taken a step of faith earlier look how much I have missed out on. He had missed the opportunity to know about God’s love for him.

He didn’t miss any more opportunities and has grown in his faith. God is a God of second chances, don’t miss the opportunity to know the love of God now, tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us.
