Support for school’s community crossing plea
PARENTS of the St Peter’s School community crossing campaign attended the Burbage Common open day to raise awareness and collect signatures for their petition.
The group is campaigning for a safe permanent crossing in London Road on London Road, Hinckley, in front of the school.
Campaigners say the lollipop lady who retired about four years ago has never been replaced.
A spokeswoman said: “Even if Leicestershire County Council recruits one, the funding for one may be pulled due to cutbacks. Hence the campaign for a permanent crossing.
“The event was a great success, helped by the continued support of local councillor, Michael Mullaney.
“We would like to thank Hinckley Borough Council for allowing us to attend the open day and special thanks to all the residents who have signed the petition so far.”
Borough mayor and mayoress Ted and Ann Hollick took time to discuss the issue with campaigners before signing the petition.
The crossing point where campaigners want to see safety improvements is used by the pupils of three schools and many other residents.
As part of the campaign, pupils of St Peter’s School recently tied green ribbons on to the school fence. The ribbons represent the pupils’ voices pleading with the county council for a safe permanent crossing.
In all, 1,305 signatures were collected at the open day, bringing the total collected to date to 6,892.
The county council has recently installed two vehicle activated signs on London Road, but campaigners say the measure does not remove the need for a crossing.
The petition is available to sign in-store at furniture retailers Jasper’s of Hinckley, in Castle Street, or online: https://politics.leics.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=77&RPID=0&HPID=0
