A patriotic Proms in Park will help mark the Platinum Jubilee

CONCERTS, stage shows and street parties are among the ways the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be marked in Hinckley and Bosworth.

The borough council has outlined its plans for the extended bank holiday weekend of Thursday June 2 to Sunday, June 5. Activities will include:

Thursday June 2: Proms in the Park, Hollycroft Park, Hinckley.

In partnershi­p with Hinckley Round Table an evening concert with Leicester’s Bardi Wind Orchestra performing Happy and Glorious, a programme of royal music. Gates open at 5pm and the show runs from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Compere for the evening will be Colin Blackler. Under the baton of conductor David Calow, the Bardi Wind Orchestra and vocal soloists Jenny Saunders and David Morris will perform pieces including Nessun Dorma, We’ll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover, as well as music from the Beatles and Abba, The Dam Busters March and Disney favourites.

The concert will conclude in traditiona­l flag-waving style with Last Night of the Proms items including Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

There will be a half-hour interval when hot drinks or an ice cream can be purchased. and Bond Street distillery will have a pop-up bar selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Those attending are welcome to bring their own picnic and drinks.

The event is free to attend and no booking is necessary, but capacity is limited in the auditorium area and will be on a first come, first served basis.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept in a lead. Admission will be via the gate entrance off Hollycroft.

Parking for blue badge holders only will be available at the park via the gates off Hollycroft. Walking to the event is recommende­d.

Thursday, June

2: Beacon lighting at Argents Mead, Hinckley, 9.15pm to 10pm. Beacons will be lit across the UK at 9.45pm.

Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4: Music in the Mead, Argents Mead, Hinckley, 1pm to 3pm.

On the Friday, Salute to the 1940s will feature a cast of six performing tributes to Vera Lynn, George Formby and Gracie Fields, plus a walkabout entertaine­r.

On the Saturday, the Emperors of Rhythm will have you dancing with 1950s songs including hits by Tommy Steel and Billy Fury, plus a walkabout entertaine­r.

Sunday, June 5: Street party day. Come and enjoy your own big jubilee lunch in one of Hinckley’s beautiful town centre parks.

Councillor Keith Nichols, executive member for culture and leisure at the borough council, said: “This will be a weekend of huge celebratio­n and we hope residents and visiting friends and relatives will join us in marking this unpreceden­ted anniversar­y. “There is lots to enjoy throughout the weekend. One of the main events will be Proms in the Park, so bring your deck chairs and picnics and settle down to enjoy the great musical talent, the singing and the flagwaving while soaking up the atmosphere in the lovely park setting.

“This will be followed by the lighting of the beacon in Argents Mead.

“However you choose to mark this occasion, may you have a safe and enjoyable time.”
