Tax rebate set to be paid out by council

-

RESIDENTS of Hinckley and Bosworth will be paid a rebate on their council tax payments from this week to help with soaring energy bills.

The £150 rebate will be sent to residents who pay by direct debit, as part of the Government’s energy bill rebate scheme.

Some 28,000 payments are set to be made by the borough council, with hopes to pay the majority of those in Bands A to D, who pay by direct debit, by the end of May.

Where the authority is not able to make a payment, such as if the name on the direct debit does not match the personal liable for council tax, the resident will be sent a letter to collect their rebate from the post office.

These letters will start to be sent within the next three weeks.

If you have not received your payment direct into your account by the first week in June or if you do not pay by direct debit, the payment will be made through the post office.

The council said in an update: “Please be assured that nobody who qualifies for the rebate will be missed or forgotten so we would ask that residents bear with us and continue to visit our website for further updates rather than telephoning.

“We will also continue to share updates on social media and post FAQs on our website.

“The Government expects local authorities to have made payments under this scheme by September 2022.

“Of course, we appreciate that people are facing a cost-of-living crisis now and we are doing all we can to make these payments as soon as possible.

“For those households who need help with their energy bills but are not eligible for the main energy rebate payment, the details of the discretionary scheme will be published shortly.”

More information is available on the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council website.
