SUMMER OF CLASSICS, FROM FILM AND THEATRE

the weather warms up, there are some fantastic events taking place at beautiful locations across Leicesters­hire over the next few months.

We’ve put together a selection of films and shows that are taking place around the county in the great outdoors - from theatre shows to enjoy with the family to movie screenings that would be ideal for a date night.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Friday, May 20 - The Green Place, Sileby

This film (15) stars Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp as two drag performers and a transgende­r woman travelling across the desert to perform their unique style of cabaret. The film starts at 8.50pm but you can visit early and enjoy the bar and barbecue. The seating area will be covered in the event of rain. Tickets are £7.50 and can be bought online. Carousel, Tuesday, May 24 to Sunday, July 3 - Kilworth House Theatre

Why not pay a visit to this unique open-air theatre in the grounds of Kilworth House Hotel?

Carousel tells the poignant story of Julie and her carnival barker husband Billy Bigelow, and includes such much-loved classics as Mister Snow, If I Loved You, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, When The Children Are Asleep and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

West Side Story, Friday, June 10; Mamma Mia!, Saturday, June 11; The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Sunday, June 12 - Belvoir Castle

Adventure Cinema is bringing three evenings of open-air cinema to this beautiful venue. Take your pick from West Side Story (12A) Mamma Mia! (PG) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (12).

All showings will begin at 9.55pm, with gates opening at 8.30pm. Picnics are welcome, and there will be food and drink available to purAS chase. Standard tickets are £14.50 and can be booked via the website.

Half a Sixpence, Tuesday, July 19 to Sunday, August 28 - Kilworth House Theatre

This new award-winning stage version of the musical comedy is inspired by HG Wells’ semi-autobiogra­phical book Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul, and is described as a completely fresh adaptation for the modern age.

It features songs including Flash, Bang, Wallop!, Money to Burn and, of course, Half A Sixpence. Tickets from £42. Book via the website.

Romeo and Juliet, Friday, August 19 - De Montfort Hall

De Montfort Hall’s summer outdoor theatre performanc­es begin with this production of Romeo and Juliet by Chapterhou­se Theatre Company.

You’ll be able to see a troupe of Shakespear­ean players perform the greatest love story ever told in magical surroundin­gs. Begins at 7pm.

- De Montfort Hall

Heartbreak production­s presents David Walliams’ Awful Auntie, adapted for the outdoor stage.

You’re invited to join in the dedication of the new playground at Saxby Hall and hear how it all came about.

Make sure you bring a blanket or chair to sit on, weather-appropriat­e gear, and a picnic, as the tale could take some time to tell, and storytelli­ng can be hungry work!

Pride and Prejudice, Sunday, August 21 - De Montfort Hall

Take a step back in time and meet Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters. Whilst their interferin­g mother engineers various courtships, Elizabeth and Jane must pursue their own quest for true love.

Can Elizabeth finally surpass her prejudices to see past the proud exterior of the enigmatic Mr Darcy?

Awful Auntie, Thursday, August 25 - Belgrave Hall

Heartbreak production­s’ Awful Auntie will also be performed at Belgrave Hall on August 25.

Performanc­e begins 6pm and is aimed at ages 7 and over. £15 adults, £10 children (under-13s), £45 family (two adults and two children).
