The World Book Day celebrations were late but still great at Catholic academy
A BUSY events calendar meant Saint Martin’s Catholic Academy, Hinckley, had to postpone their World Book Day celebrations this year – but it was certainly a case of better late than never as popular author Seth Burkett dropped in to join the fun.
Seth, who was brought up in Stafford, Lincs, has written 10 books, including Titans of the Teardrop Isle, an autobiographical account of playing football professionally in Sri Lanka.
He talked to pupils about his career as a writer, stressing the importance of resilience and hard work.
He then ran some writing workshops where he demonstrated how he uses his skills helping companies such as Land Rover and Nike to developing advertising material for new products.
For those pupils who were brave enough to dress-up as book character, there was a chance to win book prizes and chocolates.
Seth chose the winners, with Trafford, Grace and Emma taking the top three.
To build excitement during the week, games were run in the library to raise £32 for underprivileged children through the World Book Day Charity.
In addition, a Redesign a Book Cover competition, allowed the budding artists and designers to show-off their talents. A school spokesman said: “An amazing book sleeve for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, beautifully painted by Poppy, was the winner, with amazing runners-up entries from Katherine, Isaac, Sandra and Millie. “Saint Martin’s cherishes the skill of reading, so we went all out to make it a day to remember.”
