-

ON FRIDAY Earl Shilton and Barwell Amateur boxing club hosted their home show at the Hinckley rugby club ground.

Top of the bill was home boxer Shay Macateer squaring off against Aspire boxings Ryan Rose in an adult light middleweight contest.

Set for 3 x 2 minute rounds Macateer was unbeaten coming into the contest with five wins and two stoppages. Rose had eight victories in 11 outings.

Both boxers looked sharp in the opening with quick exchanges. Rose looking to target the body pressed forward. Macateer had the better foot work, moving in and out of range he unloaded with sharp jabs and stiff back hands.

As the round progressed Macateer began to get the upper hand forcing Rose to the ropes and landing a succession of clean punches to the head. On the bell Macateer had won the round and Rose was already bloody around the mouth. Rose tried to press again in the second but Macateer was measured in his distance and movement. Continually landing clean shots at range Macateer was controlling the action even though the aggressive Rose was making a fight of it. Halfway through the round Macateer landed a stiff jab followed by a long uppercut that pierced Roses guard snapping his head back and forcing him to the ropes. This shot had cause a large cut along Roses lip that would later require stiches. Rose bravely battled on but Macateer was in complete control. Prior to the start of the third round with their boxer two rounds behind and wearing significant facial damage Roses corner retired him and Macateer was declared the winner by stoppage.

Macateer moves on and is boxing on Saturday (May 20) at Braunstone for the under 71KG novice title belt.

Also boxing in the adult category for Earl Shilton and Barwell was George Johnson and Sean Crawford both at welterweight over 3 x 2 minute rounds.

Johnson boxed Jacob Onza of Spire boxing club. Johnson
