X-Cat celebrate victory in the Dry-Logic Trophy and Holt Trophy

THE Table Tennis Season concluded last week with the finals of the Team Challenge, Dry-Logic Trophy and Holt trophy.

In the Team Challenge X-Cat 1 took on Goons 1, the match proved to very tight and after four sets the score stood at 2 sets each. In the fifth set Goons Ian Weatherly defeated Rhys Emery in a four-game set to put Goons one ahead. Matt Raynor (X-Cat1) then defeated Jason Woodfield (Goons) to level the score. Emery then put X-Cat in front by beating Steve White. Goons were not finished as Woodfield overcame Alex Mason (X-Cat) in a three-set game to level the scores at 4 sets all.

So, the final game would determine the result. Rayner (X-Cat) and S Weatherly (Goons) fought out a five-set epic with the X-Cat man winning the day eventually 11-6 in the final game, to secure yet another trophy for X-Cat1.

In the Dry-Logic Trophy the final held at the George Ward Centre was between Goons 1 and Market Bosworth, and there was a clear winner Market Bosworth claiming the crown with an 8-1 victory. Pete Muir (MB) was in outstandin­g form winning all his sets in three straight games. The Goons Captain admitted afterwards that Bosworth were a class above them on the night.

In the Holt Trophy old rivals Goons1 and X-Cat 1 lined up against each other for the second time in a week with the result being the same as in the team Challenge earlier in the week. Goons raced into 3-1 lead, but then a win by Matt Rayner (X-Cat) over Ian Weatherly (Goons) closed the gap to one set. The turning point was the sixth set which was extremely close and could have gone either way. Rhys Emery (X-Cat) clinched a thrilling set 11-7 in the fifth against Jason Woodfield (Goons) to level it at three sets all.

Raynor took the seventh set for X-Cat and Woodfield the eight set for Goons leaving the outcome to be decided by the vital ninth set between Emery(X-Cat) and Weatherly (Goons).

The X-Cat man won comfortabl­y in three straight to round off a very successful season for X-Cat.

Finally, the recent County Junior Championsh­ips saw several Hinckley based players perform well.

In the Boys Under 11 the winner was Saxon Beardmore (George Ward Barwell and Sport in Desford) and the runner up was Oliver Harris (George Ward Barwell and Sport in Desford)

In the Boys Under 17 – Winner- Liam Lint (Knighton Park) with Harry Thomas (Market Bosworth) finishing as runner up.

In the final round of the Leicester Developmen­t League Sport in Desford sides, SID1 finished fourth in Div. 5, with Finn Allen winning six of his ten matches. SID 2 finished third, their top player being Finlay Bacon, who won all his games. SID 3 did much better finished second to Winstanley Wizards, with Rue Sullivan winning four of his seven games.

George Ward C finished fourth in the same Division with young Oliver Harris collecting five wins from 6.

G Ward had more success in Division 1 where they came second to Winstanley Wizards A, James Walker proved to be their top player collecting seven wins out of 11.

In Div. 5 G Ward B again took second place this time to KP Badgers. Eppie Southern winning 75% of her games.

In division 6 G Ward again finished second, this despite only having one player for most of the tournament. Alfie Newton step forward for a pat on the back, he won all 12 of his games to win the trophy for best player in the Division.
