Busy road in urgent need of repair

-

A BUSY road in Hinckley is in urgent need of resurfacing, a councillor has warned.

Nutts Lane is a key route, connecting the A5 to Coventry Road, and is regularly used by lorries, especially when there is a bridge strike on the low rail bridge over the A5.

Hinckley councillor David Bill sent a picture of large potholes on the lane, at the roundabout junction of the A5, to Highways bosses at Leicestershire County Council.

He said in his message: “Can I please put in a plea for the collapsing road surface at the junction of the A5 and Nutts Lane to receive attention?

“Nutts Lane is one of the main entrances into the town although everyone is aware that it is totally unsuitable to carry the numbers of HGVs using this route.

“The damage caused by these vehicles at the junction with the A5 is of course compounded by the damage to the canal bridge and the railway bridge further along the road.”

Cllr Bill has previously raised concerns about the state of the 200-year-old bridge over the Ashby Canal, further up Nutts Lane, as several cracks have appeared in the structure.

Two months ago, a section of the towpath near the bridge collapsed into the canal.

The Canal and River Trust said that the damage was unlikely to have been caused by traffic going over the bridge and was probably the result of erosion caused by passing boats.

The section of the road that Cllr Bill highlighted is in fact the responsibility of National Highways.

We have asked the group if there are any plans for repairs at the junction.

However, the county council is planning to carry out road surface repairs on other parts of Nutts Lane in June, as part of a countywide project.
