Sunday outing for wacky racers as the Soap Box Derby returns
DOZENS of daredevil drivers are gearing up to take on the Castle Street hill on Sunday when Hinckley’s annual Soap Box Derby returns.
There is a full-house of 30-plus entries with events getting under way at 11am.
There are two classes, junior for drivers aged 12 to 17; and senior, for those aged 18 and over.
The Hinckley BID Soap Box Derby has become a much-loved tradition.
It’s all about speed as drivers of an eccentric array of homemade vehicles hurtle down Castle Street, cheered on by a large and good-humoured crowd.
This year there will be three runs per team, with drivers given a choice between the Jump or the Chicane.
A spokesman for Hinckley BID (Business Improvement District) said: “The derby is always highly entertaining. Many teams build novelty creations, some businesses create sleek machines, whilst several raise money for charity, and all are very welcome.
“Themed and amusing soap boxes are especially encouraged since they provide the most interest to spectators. Although a small entry fee is required per soap box to help cover costs, this event is largely subsidised by the Hinckley BID on behalf of town centre businesses, several of which open on Sundays, together with a host of cafes, pubs and restaurants.”
Prizes will be awarded to competitors in the following categories:
■ Fastest single time on the day, senior;
■ Fastest single time on the day, junior;
■ Overall fastest team, senior (an average of the two fastest runs);
■ Overall fastest team, junior (an average of the two fastest runs);
■ Best turned-out soapbox/crew;
■ Best novelty soap box;
■ Most enthusiastic junior racer;
■ Best amateur soap box build.
Every entrant will receive a neck medal.
The first race starts promptly at 11am and the event is usually over by about 2pm.
All council-owned town centre car parks are free of charge on Sundays, but Church Walk car park will be closed for the event.
