The steel airframe made the air­craft heavy and rugged. Such con­struc­tion made the P-40 ca­pa­ble of ab­sorb­ing tremen­dous amounts of en­emy fire and bring­ing its pi­lot home safely. Ground crew­men patched dam­aged air­craft and got them back into their air as rapidly as pos­si­ble.
