The Russian island fortress of Suomenlinn­a outside Helsinki is attacked by an Anglo-french fleet of 77 ships. An extensive bombardmen­t ensues, which ignites several of the fortress’s gunpowder magazines. However, most of the defences remain intact. The Allied fleet withdraws after failing to land troops at Helsinki.
