An air source heat pump from Global Energy Systems has saved the owners of this renovated home £2,400 a year on heating bills

With a growing family demand for space heating and hot water, no access to mains gas and a reliance on fluctuating oil prices, the owners of this recently renovated Lancashire manor house were spending more than £4,000 a year on running their standalone oil-fired boiler and electric immersion.

After comparing installation costs and savings for various micro generation products, owner Paul Biddlecombe felt that adding an air source heat pump (ASHP) into the current heating system – alongside the boiler – would be the best course of action. He selected a Caernarfon 8-18kw model from Global Energy Systems’ range, which meets most of the household’s heating and hot water demand (even when the temperature is as low as -3.2°C outside).

In colder periods, or times of extreme weather, the original oil-fired boiler provides additional input — thus doing away with the need for a backup electric immersion. The whole setup is controlled by Global Energy Systems’ software, with a direct link to a dedicated services team. The ASHP was installed in spring 2016 and has already transformed running costs. “The savings have been incredible and the heat pump’s performance is exceeding our expectations,” says Paul. The appliance has met all the family’s requirements, and there’s been no need to operate the oil-fired boiler.

Paul and his family have already saved over 60% (£2,400) on annual bills compared to their spend on oil. The unit is also eligible for RHI payments, which net a total of £9,100 over the seven-year life of the RHI, equating to a return on investment within 30 months.
