TYPES OF GREEN ROOF
There are three basic types of green roof:
l Intensive: A thick layer of soil (200mm+) in which a wide variety of grasses, herbs, flowers and shrubs can grow.these need maintenance, and so they need to be accessible, and can even be used as a recreation space. They provide a valuable habitat for wildlife but place significant weight on the building and therefore need substantial roof support.
l Extensive: A shallow layer (50-150mm) of substrate planted with low-growing, stress-tolerant grasses, mosses and sedum.these lightweight systems require little maintenance, and impose less weight on the building.
l Semi-extensive: A soil layer of slightly greater depth than an extensive system (100-200mm) but constructed in a similar manner to allow for a greater diversity of plants while still requiring comparatively little maintenance.
The roof shown above is an alternative system:wallbarn’s M-tray delivers the green roof as individual cassettes, each effectively a section of green roofing in a box, with a 100mm deep substrate already planted, allowing a quick install on a flat roof with sufficient load bearing capacity.
