Homeowners move to the country in search of outdoor space

Agreater connection with the garden has long featured top of self-builders and home improvers’ wish-lists, but it now seems as though the lure of the urban area is officially dwindling for mainstream buyers as well.

The Office of National Statistics recently found that one in eight properties in the UK doesn’t have any outdoor space and 40% of registered home buyers surveyed by estate agent giant Savills said after the lockdown, they now find a village location more appealing than they had previously, with 71% of under 40s also expressing a more pressing desire for a garden or outdoor space.

This oak-frame home, self-built on greenbelt land in Hampshire, was constructe­d for £2,155/m2 (approximat­ely £800/m2 less than the average asking price for a house in England and Wales according to Rightmove).
