When it comes to building houses, bricks are a popular choice as while they are particularly suited to traditional designs, they can also be incredibly striking on more contemporary schemes. Selecting the correct style of brick for your property is of paramount importance and is something that is often overlooked. At Furness Brick, our team of advisors can guide you through this process to ensure that the bricks complement every aspect of your style and design.

Continuing with tradition

The most popular choice and one used by the majority of self builders is the Classic Clamp range.this versatile selection of varied colours creates a very authentic appearance as shown using the Russet White (bottom left) on this by Welsh Oak Frame property.the Ember Blend (top left) which has a similar appearance has been incorporated to enhance the design of this modern contemporary styled property. A full spectrum of colours is available to blend together for a unique look.

With our Victorian range we have created a style and texture that is no longer available through any other UK manufacturer. Adapted to suit the needs and requirements of an ever-changing market, we are the only manufacturer of a pressed smooth brick that is authentic to the original bricks of the era. Our truly unique manufacturing process recreates the style of bricks used in Victorian architecture and allows the client to build a period property with all the character of bricks from a bygone age.

At Furness Brick we have developed a weathering process that can be applied to any of of facings to give an aged appearance. The Chapel Blend from our Weathered Range (shown top right) has been built using a Flemish bond to create a traditionally styled cottage with real charm and character. This procedure has become part of our day to day manufacturing process and means that we can be totally flexible whether we are creating an old style blend for a new build or brick matching a 300-year-old property.

We also offer a free brick matching service throughout the UK.WE can adjust percentage and ratios of our blends of colour and different shades of weathering. These services mean we are considered to be one of the leading companies for the home extension and renovation market for old homes and period properties.

Although we specialise in manufacturing red bricks from our own quarry, we are also known for being one of the only UK manufacturers to have a range of imperial-sized pressed buff bricks. Over time we have developed this range to satisfy the requirements of regionalised schemes that need a brick that is generic to the local area.

Our buff range of bricks offers a very unique appearance that you do not find in other products on the market.traditionally, fired buff bricks were often known as gault bricks which are notoriously difficult to produce so are found less in today’s market. Furness Brick have been producing bricks of character from our kilns that have been continuously lit for over 80 years firing bricks to create blends that give an authentic original appearance.

HOMEOWNERS Sayu and Sharon Sinha, with their daughter, Avi PROJECT Remodel and extension of Edwardian house LOCATION Queen’s Park, London 222m2 BUILD TIME 12 months HOUSE COST £1.5million £550,000 VALUE £2.4million

The prospect of a truly smart home is tempting to many, especially as developments in the latest products become ever more helpful in day-to-day life around the house. Sayu and Sharon Sinha took the plunge and embraced the latest innovations while renovating and remodelling a dated Edwardian property that had been functioning as a five-studio HMO (house in multiple occupation) — and in doing so, immeasurably improved their family’s life. Tasked with the challenge of transforming the run-down property into a family home, Sayu integrated smart technology in the design process from the outset to help him visualise each room down to the finest details. Here, he explains their renovation journey…

We submitted for planning permission almost immediately. We wanted to restore the property to its former glory, and because the house sits in a conservation area, we needed to be sympathetic to the original brickwork. Conservation area rules limited our options on how we could extend which led to us opting for two extensions, one at the rear and one into the side return. We spent two or three months planning everything out before starting anything. I was keen to have a high-tech, futureproofed home that would reflect the needs of our family.

We started the design with tech because we were keen to know how to make the house operational. The home tech company, Intellicasa, worked closely with Cato Creative [the designers of the initial plans] and Next Chapter Designs [who were brought on-board to focus on finer detail]. Everything was planned out as a model before we even put a spade in the ground. It helped us see how day-to-day life would look, and it saved us a lot of time. We could measure out exactly how much space we’d need when the dining chairs were pulled out, so all we had to do was build around the existing furniture.
