GETTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS

-

2The art of needlework became a vehicle for revolution when the Su ragettes used this traditionally female skill to produce banners, rosettes, flags and sashes to promote their cause. Mainly using the Su ragette colours of green, white and violet, these propaganda tools were appliquéd with images and slogans including ‘Votes for Women’. Clothed and equipped with this armoury, the Su ragettes would march through the streets to get their message across. In 1918, the British movement gained its first victory when property-owning women over 30 were given the vote, with all women over 21 finally gaining the vote in 1928.
