What makes this an inviting room
This room encapsulates the Swedes’ unerringly creative knack of absorbing styles of decoration from overseas and moderating them, often with indigenous decorative conventions. The result is something new and distinct – late 18th- century Gustavian style, a pared- down version of French neoclassicism, being the best-known example. Here the furnishings range from Renaissance, rococo, neoclassical and Arts and Crafts, but in this vernacular, timber-based farmhouse the whole is recognisable as not just Swedish but, with the Ikea sofa and a pair of hunting trophies, contemporary and rural Scandinavian.
