Hailing from Madrid, Spain, this set of 51 early 19thcentury playing cards soared way above its modest estimate when it went under the hammer at Fieldings Auctioneers earlier this year. 2 DIFFERENT GLASS Estimate: £1,000–£2,000
Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) is regarded as one of Finland’s !nest glass designers. His rainbow-effect vase – which he named ‘Kukinto’, meaning in"orescence – was created for Italian glassmaker Venini in 1991. 3 PRIZE DRAW Estimate: £2,000–£3,000
Often playing on politics, taste, manners and fashion, the satirical caricatures of the Georgian era are widely regarded as some of the !nest. 4 DEEP IMPACT Estimate: £2,500–£4,000
John and Charles Deane developed the !rst underwater breathing apparatus in the 1820s, and in 1830 Augustus Siebe began building his own diving equipment using their designs as inspiration. That year, his company – which later became Siebe, Gorman & Co Ltd – produced this copper and brass helmet. In 1836 the Deanes discovered the site of the wreck of Henry VIII’s Mary Rose.
