The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation bought this evocative painting from Christie’s in 2000 to add to its peerless collection of Pre- Raphaelite art. John William Waterhouse was 46 when he painted the canvas, which was inspired by the Tennyson poem The Palace of Art – about St Cecilia, a Roman martyr. Upon its completion, it was displayed at the Royal Academy in London.
