MIDDLE EASTERN RUG

A large, woven, multicoloured carpet of late 19th or early 20th- century Middle Eastern origin has been laid over the plain wooden floorboards. In Europe, before the late 17th century, it would have been almost unthinkable to have used an imported oriental carpet as a floorcovering. Before that they would have only been wall-hung, or used to cover chairs or tables.
