Otto Prutscher (1880–1949)
The finest example of a drinking glass for champagne has to be that of Austrian designer Otto Prutscher, according to Andy McConnell. ‘His pieces were exquisitely made,’ he says. ‘They are the apex of quality and desirability.’ Prutscher was a key member of the Wiener Werkstätte in Vienna (a community of visual artists) and studied
under Josef Ho mann. His glassware is in museums around the world, including the V&A, and commands serious prices. Prutscher’s wine glasses are rare finds. They date from the early 1900s and, with their overlay glass and facet-cut bowls and stems, sell for around £2,000– £10,000. This cobalt blue wine glass (pictured) was made for Bakalowits & Sohne, Vienna, in 1907 and is for sale at 1st Dibs for £10,783.
