11 JACKIE KENNEDY ONASSIS’S FAUX-PEARL NECKLACE, 1960 SOLD: $211,500 (£156,100)
An impressive 100,000 catalogues were printed prior to Sotheby’s New York’s legendary 1996 sale of Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s estate. Over four days, the 1,301 lots fetched incredible prices. Perhaps most staggeringly of all, a three-strand faux- pearl necklace, sported by the former First Lady as she cuddled her son John in an iconic 1962 photo (above), fetched $211,500 – trouncing its lowly $500–$700 estimate.
