Legend has it that the champagne coupe was modelled on the breast of Marie Antoinette, but its shape dates back earlier than the 18th century, says Andy McConnell of Glass Etc. ‘In paintings such as The Wedding Feast at Cana by Veronese (1563), Christ’s disciples are drinking wine from coupes,’ he says. ‘Glassware was prestigious at the time and people wanted it in their paintings.’
