What makes this such an inviting room
Castle Howard is one of the few great 18th- century stately homes still in private hands. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor for Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, it suffered a catastrophic fire in 1940. Subsequent restoration was given additional impetus when the TV series
Brideshead Revisited was filmed here in 1980– 81. In 1982, the Library underwent extensive renovation. The project was led by the architect Julian Bicknell and was designed to house a unique collection of books on art, architecture, and topography, some of which date back to when Castle Howard was first built.
