QUIRKY FINDS

Collection of leather luggage, 19th and early 20th century

Estate sales throw up all sorts of goodies, especially things forgotten about and languishing in barns, outhouses, attics and former servants’ quarters. This wonderful selection of antique luggage was tucked away in a box room at Glyn Cywarch in north Wales, home of Jasset Ormsby Gore, Lord Harlech. In order to fund a big renovation project, Ormsby Gore consigned much of the contents of Glyn Cywarch for sale at Bonhams in March 2017 and the auction was so popular with bidders that every lot sold – termed a ‘white glove’ sale. The pile of luggage – an interior designer’s dream – sold for just £275 against an estimate of £200 to £300. Other similar treasures in this popular sale included a collection of top hats and array of wooden decoy ducks.
