Creative Designer Jo Bu ers on creating Parker Knoll’s iconic fabric collections
As the Creative Director for Parker Knoll, the focus of my role is reviewing and forecasting relevant interiors trends and, from these, !nding fabrics and leathers appropriate to our brand. During a typical day we’re continually working on new collections and fabric ranges. I meet with our mills and tanneries on a regular basis. They may have a new warp or yarn they’re excited about and, from this, a whole collection can develop.
Developing a new fabric collection is about building on our heritage. We’re always looking to evolve our range with new designs and colours, plus we’re experts in matching design, which gives us fabulous opportunities to work with pattern. We have a strong identity across all collections so, depending on the brief, I could be looking for anything from so# tactile plains to striking prints on velvet.
I try to keep on top of interiors trends by visiting events and shows worldwide to review new movements in style, colour and shape. I also look for lifestyle trends that may influence those core principles. For example, the way people live and use their space can influence what I am looking for in upholstery.
This year, we’re introducing so er design and colour. We have taken inspiration from a chalky palette and are focusing on informal luxury. We also have some stunning new plain fabrics that are inspired by casual linens and stonewashed velvets.
I love working for Parker Knoll because it’s based in the heart of the British furniture-making industry in Nottingham. Our Long Eaton showroom retains its heritage alongside a wealth of knowledge and cra#smanship and being part of that is very special. Interiors have been my passion from a young age, so working in this setting couldn’t suit me more. 01773 604121; parkerknoll.co.uk
