Flea Market Find

-

I recently bought this vase at a "ea market in Germany. I believe it’s French and for bulb "owers like tulips or da #odils. There is a mark on the bo!om of the piece, but it’s hard for me to identify the producer.

If you have any information about these vases, or this producer in particular, it would be absolutely fantastic if you could share it with me. Perhaps one of your experts has come across these vases before and can even give me an estimate of its value. Is it something unique and worth looking into more thoroughly perhaps?

This is certainly a porcelain bulb pot, made in France in the early part of the 19th century. In France these are referred to as caisses à oignons, and they were typically for holding tulip bulbs or cut #owers. The form is interesting and a!ractive, but not unique. Many French factories produced these pots in a variety of shapes and sizes. The most appealing aspect of this pot is the quality of the painted panels.

Unfortunately, however, the mark is rather tricky to distinguish; it may well be a decorator’s mark rather than a factory mark. The key in identifying the location of manufacture may well lie in the scene painted on one of the panels. The view with the church might be speci "c to a town in France, and could well be where your pot was made. Value at auction is around £ 400-£600.
