Negotiate a ea market

-

Flea markets are brilliant places to buy second-hand furniture and other pieces for your home at good prices. They are open to any kind of seller, private or professional, and encompass new and old, although you’ll mostly nd old items. It’s de nitely a case of elbows at dawn if you want the best pickings though, and you’ll be hunting alongside seasoned dealers who know there are antiques and collectables to be found among the thousands of unusual objects deposited on tables and tarmac. Sue Ede, fair organiser who runs the Giant Shepton Flea Market, has these words of wisdom to share…

Make a plan

‘I love the fact that a flea market is different every time. The stallholders

are a great mix of professional traders, part-timers and people who have just cleared their lofts and garages to make a few pounds. As there is so much to see, make some kind of plan of how you are going to see it all. And factor in a break for coffee.’ Have an open mind

‘Expect the unexpected! And so much more than you ever thought possible. Newcomers usually arrive with something in mind they want to buy, so see if you can spot what you want before you get distracted by everything else.’ Take the whole family

‘Flea markets appeal to all kinds of people, the whole family, with children looking for nearly new or even vintage toys, coins and fossils. People decorating their homes will find something unusual, from movie posters to antlers, while serious collectors can keep an eye out for that extra piece of china, glass, silver or jewellery for their collection.’ Arrive early

‘The bargains must be good when I spot London dealers queuing to get in early. We always have a long queue and the doors open for everyone at 9.30am. The early birds definitely catch the worms.’ Be prepared ‘Wear sensible shoes, bring cash if you can and, most importantly, have an empty car boot!’
