PIECE OF CAKE

Designer bakeware won’t guarantee a perfect sponge but your chances of success will surely rise. JAMIE OLIVER took a hands-on approach to his new range (above), available from Debenhams, 0344 800 8877, debenhams.com, which includes mini spring-form tins, £25 for four. The matching tools are thoughtfully designed to work in tandem: the rolling pin, £20, is the ideal length for the tart tins, and the palette knife, £10, is large enough to lift a 23cm cake in one motion.

JOSEPH JOSEPH, 020 7261 1800, joseph joseph.com, brings a similar attention to detail to its latest products. The Glaze refillable silicone pastry brush (left), £8, promises mess-free application via two non-drip heads for sugar glazes and egg wash, while the Fin silicone bowl scraper, £6, is shaped to access tricky to reach areas. Its integrated foot means it can be stood upright to keep surfaces free of cake mix.

all in line

Dry food storage doesn’t have to be devoid of aesthetic charm. London-based ceramicist Desa Philippi created her hand-crafted ceramic jars (above) to keep control of overflowing pasta packets in her kitchen cupboards. The range expanded from tall and wide pasta jars to smaller containers for sugar, nuts and salt. Each one is handmade, with a monochrome exterior and a bright pop of yellow inside, and prices start at £60. Available from Quiirk,

0845 643 0964, quiirk.co.uk.

take note

Giving the blackboard paint trend a run for its money, these sassy Graphpaper tiles are both eminently stylish and practical. Shown here in Carbon (on wall) and Chalk (on floor), the 59.8cm sq glazed porcelain tiles cost £89.99sq m. Contact Fired Earth, 0845 366 0400, firedearth.com.

SURFACE MATTERS

Bridging the gap between laminate and granite, Earthstone engineered acrylic surfaces can be customised on site, allowing the integration of details such as sweeping curves and undermounted sinks at the same time as the cabinets are installed. Available in tones from pale to black, from £150sq m, Wilsonart, 01388 774661, wilsonart.co.uk.

GO WITH THE GRAIN

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Crown Imperial, 01227 742424, crown-imperial. co.uk, has launched 70 new kitchen and bedroom styles. Its Textura collection is a highlight, offered in nine textured woodgrain and stone-effect styles.
