IN WITH THE NEW
We create a convivial setting for a delicious lunch to celebrate the start of the year. Turn to page 150 for the recipes
We create the perfect setting and recipes to welcome the start of the year with a celebratory lunch for family and friends.
After the extravagance of Christmas and New Year’s Eve, pare back the decorations for a light, fresh look, with plenty of pretty foliage, sparkling crystal and flickering candles. Pale, natural and scrubbed grey wood tones are the perfect base for this.

The wonderful thing about New Year’s Day is that we still have permission to indulge, but the mood is more relaxed than at Christmas, with fewer traditions and expectations to live up to. New Year’s resolutions haven’t kicked in yet and the promise of what lies ahead fills us with anticipation. What better way to share the feeling with family and friends than coming together for a celebratory lunch?
This delicious menu is perfect for the occasion, as most of it can be prepared ahead, allowing the host to spend time with guests. Once you’ve served the scallop starter, there’s no need to be jumping up to the kitchen: the duck legs and potatoes will be crisping up in the oven, the endives softening nicely, and the chocolate tart, ice cream and praline done and dusted. Here, we’ve created a gorgeous setting to match, with fresh greenery as a nod to the new year, crumpled table linens that add to the relaxed ambience and sparkling silver and glassware to make it feel like a truly special event.
Mismatched vintage vessels filled with white winter blooms and glowing tealights create the right balance of afternoon glamour and informality.
