Tactile fabrics and burnished metallic accents offer a sense of luxurious comfort

Tactile fabrics, metallic accents and a warming palette equal luxurious comfort.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE PROJECT?

The principal rooms of this handsome Grade Ii-listed house in London enjoy leafy views to the front and rear. We were asked to bring a timeless style to the interiors and the brief for this bedroom was to create a light, luxurious space with elegant and considered detailing.

DID THE ROOM’S SHAPE POSE ANY CHALLENGES?

Originally, there was an asymmetrical chimney breast in the room, but with careful partitioning we were able to lose this detail and restore a pleasing symmetry to the space. It now incorporates a striking walk-in dressing room with bespoke grey fumed oak and glass joinery, which leads to a huge bathroom finished with Calacatta Oro marble.

WHAT WAS THE STARTING POINT FOR THE SCHEME?

We began by lining the walls in a soft oyster grey paper-backed fabric and selecting a silk carpet in a similar hue. This created a dreamy tone-on-tone backdrop for the details, which include generous contrast band curtains, cushions in a muted shade of teal and beautiful twisted glass table lamps.

IS THERE A TRICK TO DECORATING WITH A LIMITED NUMBER OF COLOURS?

When working with a restricted palette, texture and pattern become increasingly important to maintain interest. I like to mix tactile fabrics, raw finishes, glass and metal for a rich, layered scheme. In this room, we designed bedside tables that combine polished nickel with selenite door fronts and a pearlised lacquer framework. The mix of materials helps to lift the space and give it a more contemporary feel.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE FURNITURE CHOICES.

The bespoke bed is upholstered in a metallic and silk weave and the ottoman, which we had made to fit the space, anchors the bed within the room. I like to use pieces with metallic tones, so we chose a goldleaf side table to sit beside the linen armchair and a mirror and brass fretwork console, which works beautifully with the metallic leaf and clear resin artwork that hangs above it. The mirrors flanking the bed feature an antiqued silver lining, which catches the light.

HOW HAVE YOU DRESSED THE WINDOWS?

Creating a sense of comfort is of utmost importance in a bedroom, so we opted for soft grey silk curtains with a horizontal contrast border in ivory and matching ivory tassel tiebacks. To complement the curtains, we added Roman blinds in a subtly patterned silk.
