We breathe new life into the coastal look with rooms dressed in shades of azure, all tempered by dashes of red and white.

Opting for bold, block colour, such as azure, denim or sapphire, on upholstery and in rugs allows depth to be added with pattern. Here, a fine ticking stripe and geometric print fabrics provide lively highlights that catch the eye.

Making blue part of the scheme rather than the focus of it o≠ers a more contemporary feel. This kitchen splashback (left), looks every bit like it’s been created using hand-made tiles but is actually a wallpaper, while subtle hints of ice blue in the seating and window frame (above) are all that’s needed to balance the more punchy reds.

For a cosy fisherman’s cottage feel, try a new twist on tongue-and-groove (left) by taking it up to picture rail height and painting it in a shade that complements the colour of the chambray curtains and upholstered headboard. This idea can be extended to the bathroom (below) where painted panelling and a plinth help define the bathing area.
