CREATING AN INVITING SCHEME

- WILLIAM YEOWARD, founder, williamyeoward.com.

I’m a great believer that a table should not be too large for the number of guests. For entertaining, opt for an oval or slim rectangular design; it’s essential that guests can talk to each other easily.

Choosing pieces that can multi-task is key. In dining rooms that open onto living spaces, use a pair of comfortable armchairs as seating for guests. These can double as easy chairs for reading and watching television on nights off.

Well positioned background lighting, such as wall lights or floor lamps, can be used to give the impression of candlelight. This is a great way to add atmosphere for evening dinner parties.

An uncomfortable dining chair is inexcusable, making meals into an ordeal. If you are buying a new set, take the time to visit the showroom to try the chairs in person.
