PETERSHAM NURSERIES

This popular Richmond destination is bringing its distinctive spirit and natural elegance to Covent Garden. Lara Boglione, managing director, tells us more

-

How did the shop come about? In 2010 we were asked by the fashion retailer Dover Street Market to curate an installation in its London store, and we used our collection of Murano vases, foraged cowslips and Icelandic poppies. It led me to see that there were possibilities for Petersham Nurseries beyond our garden walls in Richmond and how having a central London location would enable us to reach different markets and a broader audience.

What attracted you to this area? Covent Garden seemed a natural fit because of its history, humble beginnings and connection to nature. We like to think we’re bringing the garden back to Covent Garden.

Can you tell us about the design of the shop? It’s very much inspired by our family home in Richmond, reflecting our personal style and extensive travels sourcing the items that make Petersham Nurseries unique. The shop is set in a Grade Ii-listed building beneath three majestic Victorian atriums, and our focus was on restoring these beautiful features. Staying true to our horticultural roots, the shop is filled with greenery and, at the back, we have created an interactive space where our team will provide a potting service for customers.

What can visitors expect to find here? The shop offers collections of homewares, furniture and gifts, all hand-picked by me and my family, including one-of-a-kind pieces and antiques. You’ll find chandeliers, Murano glass, mercury convex mirrors, throws, cushions, Indian terracotta pots and plants and beautiful displays by our horticulture team.

Where do you source your stock? Our team travels far and wide from the UK, Italy and France to India, Indonesia and Morocco to find products. My sister Ruby and I, together with my parents, often work with the team, buying things we love. We still have relationships with the original artisans and families from whom we bought items when we opened in Richmond, but we’re always searching for unique pieces and exquisite antiques.

Are you led by trends? No. Primarily we celebrate seasonality and we have remained true to our origins and philosophy over the years – these values will be maintained in Covent Garden. We’ve definitely noticed an increased interest in responsibly sourced products and slow living, which we are particularly passionate about. I very much hope that these are not trends, but are now part of the buyer’s mindset.

What are your most popular products? Our hand-crafted ceramics from Astier de Villatte always catch the eye. We also think our customers will be very excited by our latest range of linens, throws, towels and rugs – items that we have never been able to store that easily in Richmond.
