DECORATING WITH METALLICS

-

I love the juxtaposition of the hard exterior of metallics combined with the glowing warmth that they create in the home. I don’t think there is a single room in the home where I wouldn’t use accents of metallics – they are fantastic for adding a touch of glamour and sophistication.

The beauty of metallics lies in their versatility. For darker and smaller rooms, I would go for a warming and antiqued gold or bronze that will create a cosy and welcoming feel, while in larger and brighter rooms, I would choose wow-factor shiny bright coppers and golds that will turn heads and impress guests.

Nothing beats an eclectic mix of metallics: when styled well, the effect is magical. The trick is to choose one ‘base’ metallic and then layer and mix tonal metals throughout the room. Take time to consider what finish and metallic would work best in the room. Aged and patinated finishes look lovely in an industrial-style interior, while a shiny gold metallic surface looks beautiful in rooms with a contemporary style.

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of reflective gold kitchen cabinets and islands on Instagram and, of course, I am a lover of all things unusual so these have really caught my eye. I think that it is a completely showstopping feature for the kitchen that creates impact, warmth and plenty of personality.

For someone who wants to take a gentler approach, throws, cushions, rugs and ornaments are a good start. Alternatively, go for a copper ceiling light or a gold ornament for a coffee table. The beauty of these pieces is that they can be moved around the home with little or no effort and it is a fantastic way to test the waters.
