Uniform-sized bookshelves are fine for libraries but less so for a home environment. When commissioning bespoke joinery, be sure to request a mix of heights to accommodate different sizes and shapes of tomes. Go one step further and break up the shelves with a dedicated space for a favourite piece of art or sculpture; take this into consideration from the beginning to ensure your pieces have space to fit comfortably. If the shelves are deep enough, use them also to display curios and items amassed from travels. Forgo bookends and break up your hardbacks with objets and smaller sculptural pieces. Paint the shelves in a bold accent colour to draw the eye. →

SHOW UP

Studio Ashby proves in this room that white (or off-white) is the go-to choice when it comes to setting off a broad breadth of artwork; this way no one colour will dominate above the others.

MELTING POT

Make an artful design statement by leaving the walls naked and using a beautiful vignette of earthy ceramics set on a mantel with a soothing backdrop colour.

MUSICAL NUMBER

Turn treasured items into pieces of art. Here, Anna Hewitson shows off a client’s collection of old vinyl covers by framing them on smart black mounts with a brass frame.
