MAKE YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS CARD WITH ARTIST JO WATERHOUSE
Jo Waterhouse founded Hadley Paper Goods in 2016 after having her first child and moving out of London, and now you can find her artistic cards in Hauser & Wirth, Tate, Kettle’s Yard and the V&A among many others.
Jo has a keen eye for design gained through years of sourcing antiques to sell on her stall at Spitalfields Market. Every Hadley card design is made from a hand-cut collage that lends a vibrancy you can’t achieve with a computer. Jo’s fine art collages are highly sought after by collectors. Here, Jo shares how to create a personalised Christmas card.
YOU WILL NEED
Card
Ruler
Craft knife
Pinking shears Coloured papers Paintbrush and pen
1 Cut a piece of card to 40x7.5cm and score across the width at 10cm, 15cm, 25cm and 30cm to make the basis for the card.
2 Choose a piece of coloured paper and cut to 25x7cm. Decorate the paper by adding texture and pattern – cutting the bristles of a paintbrush makes an excellent pattern-making brush; you can do wiggles and spots, or criss-cross or stripes, if you like.
3 Fold the coloured paper in half to make it into the shape of a cracker. I use pinking shears for the ends, then cut in half across the centre in deep zigzags.
4 Write Merry Christmas on a 10x7cm piece of coloured paper and shape it into a starburst.
5 Stick the pieces onto the backing card. I add tinsel at the tie points by using pinking shears to cut out a bit of the coloured paper for a finishing touch.
