TEENAGE AMATEUR TRIUMPHS
HECTOR BAKER, 19, works full time in civil engineering and fits in eventing two horses round work. He scored his first intermediate win at Upton on Gary Power’s Wieke, a 14-year-old Niagara mare known as “Squeaky”.
“Gary sent me a horse to hunt [with the Berkeley], then when that went back, he sent me Squeaky to compete,” said Hector. “She’s quite a character — very nice when she wants to be! She’s got all the talent and a hell of a jump, and we’ve created a partnership. If I let her have her head and sit still, she’ll really jump for me.”
The pair showjumped clear and added eight crosscountry time-faults to their 29.8 dressage to beat Charlotte Bacon and Cooley Enno by less than a mark. Burgham CIC2* is their next aim.
