OPINION Letters plus editorial

Sir — I was interested to read Carl Hester’s remarks in his column (opinion, 5 October) in which he highlights the gripes about the British Dressage (BD) National Championships.
Carl also suggests getting rid of the BD web forum so that “everyone who has a gripe will be forced to air it at the AGM” and I agree. Let’s do away with opportunities for people to air so much “bile” as he terms it, as it has become all too easy to fire off a tirade of abuse. However, more concerning is the knowledge that these attitudes and thinking exist, and they appear in everincreasing numbers.
As an ex-Pony Club district commissioner, while we often had to deal with faceto-face confrontations and disagreements, I obviously was blissfully ignorant of the vile attitudes now expressed so freely on social media.
I still stand by Evelyn Beatrice Hall’s, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” but come on folks, would you really have the courage to say to someone’s face the dreadful things you type? Leona Waugh BHSII Terregles, Dumfries
