Overheard at a show, a rider talking herself out of the next class. “She jumped well,” she said. True. “She worked really hard yesterday.” Also true. “To be honest, I can’t be bothered,” she added, after a pause. Ah. Now we get to it.

Top man Geoff Billington took the live-stream mic for the leading showjumper of the year at HOYS. Of one tricky fence, he opined: “They have to be as careful as a nudist over a barbed wire fence to jump that.” Thanks for that mental picture, Geoffrey.

Lots of people being nasty to Bridget Andrews, who fell while in the lead in a race. Of course it’s easy to be a good rider when you don’t leave your armchair, but of particular note was a man blaming her for “losing me 50 notes” when he was “really struggling this week”. Um. Maybe you shouldn’t have gambled then?
