Sir — I agree totally with Katie Jerram-Hunnable’s suggestion (opinion, 28 June) for a day-ticket arrangement to enter county shows. In fact, I’d suggest that any rider should be able to enter an affiliated class at any show. They simply need to abide by the rules of the society running the classes and accept they will not qualify for any championship show.
Over the years, I have known of many competitors wanting to become a show society member in order to compete at local county shows, but being put off because of the cost of membership.
As a result, shows miss out on entries revenue, local county shows lack a community feel and spectators see empty rings that actually do more to make riding look elitist. I sincerely hope that the entry restrictions can be relaxed for the benefit of all.
