Upper body twist

-

Aim: this enables you to open up the ribcage and shoulders. A lot of riders collapse through their shoulders and lean forwards, which puts them in a vulnerable position when they are riding, as they’re more likely to end up in front of the horse’s movement should he spook or stop suddenly. This exercise brings your shoulders back and encourages you to raise up through your ribcage, giving you a more secure position in the saddle.

how to do it: stand with your feet a hip’s width apart, ensuring your upper body and head are in a straight line. Place your hands on your hips or your arms out in a straight line at shoulder height, whichever feels more comfortable, keeping your legs straight. Gently turn your upper body to the left and hold for two to three seconds. Return back to the centre and do the same on the right side. Repeat five times.
